David Allen Swarts, 85, of Cleveland Heights, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2024. Born in Alliance, Ohio, he was the son of Kathryn (Oswalt) Swarts and Fran Winston Swarts. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lynne Kay Weedling (2021), wife of Robert in Boca Raton, Florida, and by his brother, Joseph Swarts (1985), of San Francisco, California. David was the beloved husband of Ann for 62 years, loving father of Craig Swarts (Erica) and Tricia Bolinger (Gary), doting grandfather to Brian, Ben (Abbie), and adoring great-grandfather of Annelise and Charlotte.
David was a graduate of Alliance High School and obtained a B.S. in Education from Mount Union College. He then earned his Master of Education degree at Kent State University. He began his teaching career in Alliance, focusing on junior high level social studies. Subsequently, he spent the majority of his career teaching geography and history in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school system at Roxboro and Monticello junior high schools. In addition, he worked as a driver for Cleveland Southeastern Trails, both before and after his retirement.
David loved music, playing trumpet in the marching band in both high school and college. He also sang with his college choir, followed by a long tenure as a member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.
He loved to take photographs, and assembled an extraordinary collection of slides and photos of his family, taken within the U.S. and abroad.
David joined the Church of the Saviour in 1967 and became a member of the Chancel Choir shortly thereafter, leading to a singing career of almost 50 years. He was also a long-time member of Kingsley Class.
David loved to attend events with his family and was a constant companion of Craig at Cleveland Indians games, Mount Union and Ohio State football games, and performances of the Cleveland Orchestra and Columbus Symphony. He was a frequent attendee with Tricia and Gary at Brian and Ben’s soccer games, from their youth soccer days, through high school, and college.
David was a loving, generous, kind, and funny man who treated everyone as a friend, and the world was a better place with him in it.
