Donna Zimmie McCabe, 63, of Cleveland Heights, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on March 7, 2019 after a long illness.
Donna is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Keith McCabe, her mother, Anna Zimmie, sister Annie McGill, brother John Zimmie, and four sons, Colin McCabe (Haithuy), Michael McCabe, Andrew McCabe (Stephanie), Karl McCabe, and numerous cousins and nephews.
Donna was born in Philadelphia, PA where she met her future husband at a rugby match. After moving to Cleveland, she began a lifelong nursing career caring for others, spending decades providing dedicated care in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Those fortunate enough to have worked with her or been under her care recognized her skill and compassion.
Donna valued education and self-improvement. A life-long learner, she attained a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Nursing, as well as a Bachelors and Masters in History, with a focus on European and Russian studies. Donna spoke both German and Russian. Additionally, she taught nursing at Kent State University.
Donna enjoyed world travels with her husband, backpacking across Europe, Ireland, the UK, and the Americas. She was a voracious reader of books and novels, imparting this passion to her sons. She was happiest when surrounded by those she loved most: her family. Her inherent strength and unconditional love allowed her and her family to survive many difficult and trying times. She was seen by others as a genuine, if at times irreverent, confidant.
Donna volunteered her time to individuals with special needs in organizations such as Special Olympics and Linking Employment, Abilities and Potential (LEAP). One of her favorite activities was raising money and participating in the annual winter Polar Bear Plunge in Lake Erie. Donna was an animal lover, in particular cats, dogs, and monkeys. While the world is a darker place without her light, the love and joy she brought to others will forever be reflected and continued in those who knew her.
