Dr EDWARD A STEIGERWALD, PhD, age 88
Beloved husband of 65 years to Barbara (nee Kosiorek). Loving father of Susan Ruflin (Paul), Ann Smith (Rick, both deceased), Edward J (Chris), Paul (Cheryl), Mary O'Donnell (Terry) and Joan Murphy. Cherished grandfather of Justin (Nancy), Michael (Nora), PJ (Anna), Dan (Megan), Erin (Alex), Luke (Emily), Cole, Connolly, Cate, Matthew, Kevin, Maggie, Karen, Jack. Devoted great grandfather of Jacob, Aubrey, Kyla and Hunter. Dearest brother of Albert, Angela Maloy and the following deceased: Bernard and Mary Sterkel.
Dr. Steigerwald was a lifelong resident of Cleveland. He attended Benedictine High School then Case Institute of Technology, where he studied metallurgy and was a top performer on their basketball team. By 1953 he had earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in metallurgy. He served two years in the US Army after being drafted following the end of the Korean War. In 1957, despite being married with five children, he made the daring decision to return to school. Using a GI bill to pay for his education, he earned his PhD in 1959 from Case Institute of Technology.
He spent much of his career working for TRW where he began in research and development and eventually was promoted to vice president/general manager of the company's casting division in Minerva Ohio.
He was an active member of the Benedictine Alumni Association, Case Institute of Technology Alumni Association and The American Society of Metals. He was an outdoor enthusiast and a member of the Cleveland Hiking Club, hiking until he was 80 years old and logging in over 14,000 miles.
Private Inurnment Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather for Mass of Christian Burial 10 am Saturday at Gesu Church, 2470 Miramar Blvd, University Hts. Friends may call at MAHER-MELBOURNE FUNERAL HOME, 5236 MAYFIELD RD, LYNDHURST (E OF RICHMOND RD) 4-6 PM FRIDAY AND AT GESU CHURCH FROM 9-10 AM SATURDAY.
