Tom Hagesfeld, PhD, born on June 5, 1942, was the beloved son of Charles and Alice Hagesfeld. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, at the age of 82. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death.
Tom earned his PhD in psychology from Case Western Reserve University and impacted countless people in his over 50 years of experience. Tom began his professional journey with the state of Ohio, where he worked as a psychologist with severely mentally ill patients before transitioning into a leadership role, serving for over 25 years. Following his retirement from the state, Tom continued his work in mental health for another 20 years as a surveyor for the Joint Commission. In this role, he traveled across the country, collaborating with hospital administrators to ensure that mental health facilities met the highest standards of care. Additionally, Tom shared his extensive knowledge as a professor at Cleveland State University. Throughout his career, Tom was widely admired for his genuine passion for helping others, earning consistent praise from colleagues, students, patients, and clients for his unwavering commitment to improving healthcare and making a lasting impact on people’s lives.
A man of strong moral character, Tom lived his life by a simple but powerful philosophy: Love your family and do the right thing. He was a quiet yet steady presence, living his values every day.
Tom’s family meant everything to him. He was married to his loving wife, Kirsten, for 52 years. Together, they shared a deep bond, traveling the world and creating lasting memories, particularly in her home country of Denmark, which he came to love. Tom was a proud father to his sons, Michael and Christopher, his daughters-in-laws Elise and Beth, and an even prouder grandfather to Sam, Owen, Dana, Lilly, and Eric. Whether it was attending Cleveland Browns games or enjoying family gatherings, Tom’s greatest joy was being with those he loved.
Tom is also survived by his sister, Jan, and extended family members, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was a valued friend, known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for those around him.
Family and friends are invited to join for Memorial Visitation Wednesday, December 18th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at The Maher Melbourne Funeral Home, 5236 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst (East of Richmond Road). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Dobama Theater in Cleveland Heights, a place that was very special to Tom and Kirsten both. Tom’s memory will forever be cherished. He had a curiosity and a zest for life that was contagious to all who met him. His legacy of integrity, family devotion, and genuine care for others will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
